A clutter-free environment significantly reduces stress and allows for a more peaceful, enjoyable life. When your surroundings are organized, your mind can also find calm, as it’s no longer distracted by piles of unfinished tasks or things that need attention. According to research, clutter can increase cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and lead to feelings of being overwhelmed. In contrast, a tidy space promotes mental clarity and focus, freeing up cognitive energy for more enjoyable activities rather than debating where to start or feeling guilty about tasks left undone.

When clutter is reduced, decisions become easier. Without the constant internal debate of where to begin or what to prioritize, you can focus on what truly matters. This newfound mental clarity offers more time to engage in activities that bring you joy—whether it's spending quality time with family, exploring hobbies, or simply relaxing. In fact, a clean environment has been shown to improve mood and enhance productivity.

By taking the time to declutter, you’re investing in your emotional and mental well-being. Instead of feeling paralyzed by chaos, you’ll have the energy to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, knowing that everything around you is in its place.

Here’s a comprehensive list of decluttering tasks and how often they should be done to maintain a tidy and organized home:

Daily Tasks

Return items to their designated places: Prevents buildup and keeps surfaces clear.

Sort mail and paperwork as soon as you bring it in: Avoids piles and ensures important documents are not lost.

Declutter countertops: Only keep essential items visible.

Empty trash: Keeps the environment fresh.

Weekly Tasks

Go through your wardrobe: Donate or store clothes you haven’t worn.

Organize your desk: Ensures productivity and focus.

Clear out expired food from the fridge and cupboards: Maintains freshness and hygiene. I had foods that expired in the back of my cabinets and medicine drawer that were 4 years expired.  Something my Grandmother was notorious for doing.

Monthly Tasks

Reassess storage spaces: Ensure everything has a place.

Sort through books and magazines: Donate or recycle those you won’t read.

Every 3-6 Months

Review digital clutter: Organize files and delete unnecessary data.

Declutter garage or attic: Avoids accumulation of unused items.

Yearly Tasks

Conduct a full home declutter: Re-evaluate items and decide what to keep, donate, or discard.

Reorganize storage areas: Garages, attics, and basements can accumulate clutter easily. One rule that is imperative to keep declutter abay is One item in and one item out. If you purchase a new pair of jeans, most likely there are a pair of jeans that are to small and you've been holding onto them for 10 years.  Let's face it - there out of style.  You won't wear them again.  By consistently decluttering, your home will remain organized and welcoming!
